Myfanwy Tristram

Myfanwy Tristram has been drawing comics all her life. Her work focuses on activism, social history, fashion and pop culture, always weaving in a strand of human interest and, where possible, humour. Her comics have been shortlisted for the LDComics award, the Broken Frontier award, and twice for the First Graphic Novel award.

In 2017, Myf co-ordinated the Draw the Line project, bringing together more than 100 comic artists from 16 countries to depict simple actions that anyone can take when they don’t like the current political landscape. The resulting book was first successfully crowdfunded in the UK, and then published in the US by Street Noise Books.

Myf is deeply involved in the comics community, both in the UK and internationally, with connections to an extensive network of creators. She is a co-Director of the Comics Cultural Impact Collective, which seeks to create better opportunities for creators and more recognition for the value of comics in the UK; often speaks at academic conferences, comics/arts festivals and events; and helps to run Cartoon County, the Brighton-based comics meetup.

Myf is interested in the power of comics to educate, enrage and create change in the world. She fits her comics practice around a full-time job in Marketing and Communications at a democracy NGO, with each side of her life inspiring and informing the other: for example, with one project she brought comics to the Freedom of Information community, and introduced the history of Freedom of Information to comics fans.

With The Noisy Valley, Myf explores the power of protest in a neglected region of South Wales; in Satin and Tat she sets a bildungsroman in a background of 80s subculture, circling with affection and first-hand experience around the fashion, hair, makeup and music of the era.
